BRM Agro Co., Ltd. has announced its plans to invest in a fortified rice line to support the efforts of the UN World Food Programme (WFP) in its mission to combat child malnutrition and stunting.
As Cambodia's largest fully integrated rice farm and mill, BRM Agro is on a mission to assist as Cambodia faces significant challenges with childhood malnutrition and stunting, with 32% of children under five experiencing stunted growth. This issue is particularly prevalent in rural areas, where more than a third (34%) of youths are affected, compared to 24% in urban areas. [1]
Malnutrition in children can lead to long-term health problems, including poor immune functions, impaired brain development, and increased risk of chronic diseases.
WFP Promoting Nutrition In Cambodia
The WFP has been providing nutritious meals to primary and pre-primary school children since 1999 in Cambodia and these school meals can improve nutrition, attendance, and learning.
WFP supports the development of strategies, programmes and guidelines to prevent malnutrition and advocates for increased investment in nutrition. WFP promotes rice fortification by supporting collaboration between public and private actors, generating evidence and advocating for regulatory frameworks and standards. WFP also supports the integration of fortified rice into the national home-grown school feeding programme and arranges communication and outreach campaigns to increase market demand.
One promising solution to combat the issues of malnutrition is the introduction of fortified rice. which has been enriched with essential vitamins and minerals, such as iron, vitamin A, and folic acid. This process helps to address nutrient deficiencies in populations that rely heavily on rice as a staple food, such as in the Kingdom of Cambodia.
Benefits of Fortified Rice For Cambodia
1. Improved Nutritional Value: Fortified rice provides additional vitamins and minerals that may be lacking in the diet of individuals or populations that rely heavily on rice such as in Cambodia.
2. Reduced Risk of Disease: Certain micronutrient deficiencies, such as vitamin A deficiency, can increase the risk of diseases like blindness and infection.
3. Economic Impact: Addressing malnutrition can lead to better educational outcomes and increased productivity, ultimately contributing to economic growth in the Kingdom.
Fortified Rice Implementation in Cambodia
Introducing fortified rice in Cambodia could be a game-changer in the fight against childhood malnutrition and stunting. By ensuring that children receive the necessary nutrients through their daily diet, fortified rice can help improve overall health and development outcomes.
Fortified rice offers a practical and effective way to address the pressing issue of childhood malnutrition and stunting in Cambodia. By enriching a staple food such as rice with essential nutrients, significant strides can be made towards a healthier future for Cambodian children.
BRM Agro is proud to be part of this initiative and of its investment in the future of Cambodia’s youth and their future.
